LATEST PROJECT: Holiday Promos
Although I have not been “drafted” – yet, Dribbble is a great resource for designers. Featuring some fantastic designers in world of type, web, print and beyond. It makes a what can seem like a big scary industry into something that feels more local than global. What really surprised me about this site, which gives a place for designers to share “shots” of works in progress, is the positive feedback and criticism I have seen so far from the community. There are the brief, “Very cool” or “Hell yes”, but most of the time you get a response that constructive and supportive.
The positive nature of the forum can probably be attributed to the selective process of the Dribbble administrators, that encourages prospects to follow users that contribute real projects and ideas to the forum and not pictures of their house cats. So, I am looking forward to being drafted one day, never thought I would be saying that, sports are not really my thing.
My Vegan Tee has been selling really well for the folks at The Autonmie Project. It has also got the attention of Stuff Magazine Boston. 25% of each sale goes to Farm Sanctuary. Learn about The Farm Sanctuary Here.
From the article:
But there are times when it’s actually pretty useful for people to publicly broadcast their viewpoints, values, and identities on their cars – or in their wardrobes. It can prevent social faux pas: for example, we probably won’t offer a big, juicy burger to a summer barbecue guest sporting this recycled vegan tee ($26) from Boston-based Autonomie Project (autonomieproject.com), a fair-trade fashion company specializing in eco-friendly footwear, clothing, and accessories.
In an effort to get my name out there into a crowded design world I have posted my work to a few portfolio sites. There are a lot of resources available and I found that these few have a lot to offer. Here some of the ones I have been using in case you find yourself looking for full time or freelance work.
Creative Hotlist - I have found a few leads from this site. I can post my resume, cover letter and links to my site and examples of my work on the web. Although you have to pay for it, they will also post examples of your work and a/or a PDF for potential clients and employers to download. Job Seekers can search by location and title.
Coroflot - This site is relatively new, at least it is to me. For no cost you get a profile page, portfolio examples and a resume. You automatically get you site featured on the front page your fist day and users can follow your work, mark it as liked and send you messages. There is also an employer directory available so you can do some research.
Krop - Very popular with the industry. Basic free service includes a resume, profile and a limited number of portfolio images. Might be worth paying the $9.99 to add more portfolio projects. This site gets a lot of eyes on it.
Behance Network - Another very popular site. You have to email them a request to add you to the network. I do not know what their criteria is, but I heard back from them the next day. You get a resume, a profile and unlimited number of projects and images. This site is more like a social media site where you friend people and have little circles or friends. The networking aspect of this site is great, you never know who you are talking to.
I will post more as I find them. Happy Hunting!
